Hi! I found your podcast very enlightening-I just have two questions. I listened to both this episode, and the episode on reflex integration . In my experience as a parent looking for an OT, I find most OTs either focus on working on reflex integration, or come from a sensory processing/integration perspective, where they work on the various systems. Why is this, and as a parent (whose child has what I feel are non-integrated reflexes), what kind of OT do I look for?
Hi Brenda!
Thank you so much for your comment; so glad you enjoyed the podcast. So when treating children, our approach is to look at the underlying root cause issues from a lens of development – looking at all components – the sensory integration, reflex integration, and neurochemical development components. We agree that it is a pity that OTs sometimes hyperfocus on only one lens when in reality we are whole beings. If you are looking for an OT that is looking at children and treating them through all these lenses, I would make sure that they are SIPT certified (which means they have advanced training in sensory integration) and when speaking with them, be sure that they are not only using one reflex integration approach. Their focus should be on the evaluation and asking questions coming from all sides.
I hope that helps. Please feel free to reach out if you need further assistance.
